Agricultural Boom 1960's - 1970's

1960's - Kendrick Oil Company branches out briefly (1956-mid 1970's) into fertilizer business.



July 14, 1960 (Front Page, Friona Star)

Kendrick Oil Company and Chester & Fleming Gin are cut off from the rest of town after flooding on the Frio Draw breaks levees constructed after 1941 floods. Kendrick Oil is located in the center, left of the photo, below the draw.




1971 - Kendrick Oil Company employs 7 people:
Pudge Kendrick
Ruby Barnett (Book-keeper)
Charles Scales (Manager)
Clyde Scarborough (Delivery Driver)
Tony Reyes (Delivery Driver)
Robert Saiz (Delivery Driver)
Steve Bavosett

Scales, having been employed by Kendrick for 17 years in 1971, saw many changes to the business. In a quote to the Friona Star, Scales indicated the biggest change was that

"farmers don't come around like they used to. They would come in and visit for an hour, maybe two. But today, they just call you on the telephone"

early 1970's - Kendrick Oil Company opens first Fast Stop Convenience Store location, in the old Conoco Station operated by current delivery driver Randol Allen.

1976 - Danny Kendrick, son of Pudge and Deke, starts at Kendrick Oil as a delivery driver
